Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on examples of the perceived tensions of the healthcare work‐based learners as they experienced paradigm shifts in both practice and education.

Design/methodology/approach

Examples are drawn from a qualitative study to examine work‐based learning (WBL) workshops in a Dutch healthcare setting, and a developmental project led by an academic to implement a WBL accredited programme across Acute and Primary Care Trusts in a region of England. The paper also supports the argument of Flood and Romm that within complex organisations there is a need to develop “triple loop” learning as opposed to “double loop” learning. A discussion of the tensions which relate to experience and research is presented.

Findings

The paper finds that WBL is not easy, especially in times of rapid change and resistance to new ways of working by some colleagues. Managers, academics, mentors and healthcare learners need opportunities to discuss and interpret experience in order to construct meaning and new knowledge of practice. Key to enabling the development of the work‐based inquirer to cope with change and ethical dilemmas is the commitment of facilitators to inspire learning, support the exploitation of workplace resources and encourage networking within and external to the organisation.

Practical implications

A benefit of the WBL approach is that it engages the learner in problem solving and enhances the skills of inquiry, networking and creativity. It is important for the learner to gain awareness of the ethical knowledge underpinning practice. Tensions can arise as paradigms shift and when boundaries are misinterpeted, and personal and organisational values and beliefs conflict.

Originality/value

While the focus is healthcare the discussion could be relevant and of interest to a wider international audience of WBL practitioners as it considers a topic that is undervalued in workplace learning journals but is a reality of shifting paradigms.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim is to present findings of a theoretical analysis for optimal design of a concrete trough for a new lightweight low‐profile rail track system.

Design/methodology/approach

A non‐linear numerical optimisation technique is adopted to predict the minimum area of a pre‐tensioned pre‐stressed trough section satisfying the serviceability and ultimate limit states as per British Standard BS 8110 for critical loading and boundary conditions.

Findings

An optimum concrete trough section is calculated to carry all possible load combinations expected during the design life of the track. The performance of the rail, elastomeric pad and track base were found to be satisfactory under the same critical loading and boundary conditions.

Originality/value

The theoretical analysis gives a valuable insight into system parameter values that can optimise design performance and cost. However, these optimal design features now need to be tested experimentally.

Findings

The paper provides information about each source, discusses the characteristics of current scholarship, and describes sources that contain unique scholarly contributions and quality reproductions.

Originality/value

The information in the paper may be used by librarians and interested parties as a quick reference to literature on library instruction and information literacy.

Abstract

Purpose

Our paper is centred on exploring the experiences of opening up closed doors to strangers in the context of home exchange.

Methodology/approach

This paper is based on a year-long research project which has drawn on multiple qualitative methods of data collection. A bricolage approach was adopted to enable the authors to gather data which is sensitive to multivocality and conscious of difference within the consumer experience.

Findings

Our findings demonstrate that home exchangers treat their home as an asset to be capitalised, to allow them to travel to places and communities otherwise unreachable. Home exchangers simultaneously engage in the symbolic creation of home in a temporary environment and utilise the kinship and community networks of their home exchange partner.

Practical implications

Our paper adds depth and an insight to the increasing media coverage of the home exchange phenomenon.

Social implications

As a consumption practice that is witnessing widespread appeal, home exchange uncovers evidence of trust amongst strangers. While it is common practice to open the home in order to build friendship, it is less common for this invitation to be extended to strangers.

Originality/value

We extend the extensive theorisation of the home as a symbolic environment and reveal that the home can also be used in an enterprising fashion.

These and all points east and west are covered and laid out in a simple, abstract style, including, where applicable, references, endnotes and bibliography in an easy‐to‐follow manner. Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review current practice in sharing and mining medical data revealing benefits, costs and ethical issues. Based on stakeholder perspectives and values, the authors create an ethical code to regulate the sharing and mining of medical information.

Design/methodology/approach

The framework is based on a review of academic, practitioner and legal research.

Findings

Owing to the inability of current safeguards to protect consumers from risks related to the disclosure of medical information, the authors develop a framework for ethical sharing and mining of medical data, security, transparency, respect, accountability, community and quality (STRACQ), which espouses security, transparency, respect, accountability, community and quality as the basic tenets of ethical data sharing and mining practice.

Research limitations/implications

The STRACQ framework is an original, previously unpublished contribution that will require modification over time based on discussion and debate within and among the academy, medical community and public policymakers.

Social implications

The framework for sharing borrows from the Fair Credit Reporting Act, allowing the collection and dissemination of identified medical data but placing strict limitations on use. Following this framework, benefits of shared and mined medical data are freely available with appropriate safeguards for consumer privacy.

Originality/value

Mandates for adoption of electronic health-care records require an understanding of medical data mining. This paper presents a review of data mining techniques and reasons for engaging in the practice of identifying benefits, costs and ethical issues. The authors create an original framework, STRACQ, for ethical sharing and mining of medical information, allowing knowledge exploration while protecting consumer privacy.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe men's knowledge of prostate cancer and the factors associated with these knowledge levels at selected regions in Western Sydney. The study was a descriptive, quantitative design using a postal survey of men over 40 years of age. A questionnaire consisting of 19 items that addressed areas of knowledge related to prostate cancer was used. The men in this study needed more information about risk factors for prostate cancer, screening techniques and treatment regimens and their side effects. This study has shown that if men are to make informed decisions about prostate cancer screening, it is important to have some form of decision aid on prostate cancer screening available to them.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to trace the restructure of the Victorian Education Department in Australia during the years 1980-1992. It examines how the restructuring of the department resulted in a generational reorganization of secondary schooling. This reorganization culminated in the closure of secondary technical schools that today continues to have enduring effects on access and equity to different types of secondary schooling.

Design/methodology/approach

The history is based on documentary and archival research and draws on publications from the State government of Victoria, Education Department/Ministry of Education Annual Reports and Ministerial Statements and Reviews, Teacher Union Archives, Parliamentary Debates and unpublished theses and published works.

Findings

As an outcome the restructuring of the Victorian Education Department, schools and the reorganization of secondary schooling, a dual system of secondary schools was abolished. The introduction of a secondary colleges occurred through a process of rationalization of schools and what secondary schooling would entail.

Originality/value

This study traces how, over a decade, eight ministers of education set about to reform education by dismantling and undoing the historical development of Victoria’s distinctive secondary schools system.
